Role in StARE
The Portuguese team from Porto is hosted by the Centro de Biotecnologia e Química Fina (CBQF) of the Escola Superior de Biotecnologia, Universidade Católica Portuguesa (ESB-UCP) (http://www.esb.ucp.pt/) and it is leaded by Célia Manaia, the project coordinator.
This team has been working on the ecology of bacteria in environments subjected to human action, with particular interest on the diversity and dynamics of antibiotic resistant bacteria and genes over the urban water cycle.
In StARE, Porto team will be involved in WP2, dedicated to establish the first overview of antibiotic resistance genes occurring in treated wastewater in different European countries. This group will also promote the interaction between WP2, WP3 (dedicated to the development of advanced wastewater treatment processes) and WP4 (focused on the mechanisms of resistance spread/selection during wastewater treatment). Therefore, Porto team will apply some of the methods developed in WP2 to analyse the effects of wastewater treatment processes (WP3) on the microbiome and resistome (WP4).
Besides project coordination, which involves organization and communication among the different partners and WP, this team is also actively involved in bridging StARE with other ongoing activities, such as those of the WG5 (Wastewater Reuse and Contaminants of Emerging Concern) of NORMAN (http://www.norman-network.net/?q=node/106) and of the ESSEM COST Action ES1403 New and emerging challenges and opportunities in wastewater reuse (NEREUS), http://www.nereus-cost.eu/.
The Porto team is financed by the Portuguese National Agency Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), http://www.fct.pt/.
